Swamp Rat Is a One-of-a-Kind Drag-Racing Treasure

Don Garlits, 88, still chasing 200-mph runs.

BY*SUSAN WADE

*JAN 20, 2020

Drag Racing ace “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, who topped the list of*NHRA's Top 50 Racers*in a 2000 poll of historians, media, officials, drivers and racing insiders, earned his respect grudgingly, and his “Swamp Rat” brand that overshadowed those of his NHRA competitors began in 1959 as an insult.

In a snit about this hardscrabble Florida upstart stirring a buzz in the sport, Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Famer*Serop “Setto” Postoian*placed an ad in*Drag News*calling Garlits “a swamp rat.”

Steamed about it at first, Garlits embraced the nickname. Garlits christened all 34 of his self-built cars and his 2009 Dodge Challenger Drag Pak “Swamp Rat” editions.

Each Swamp Rat creation has a special history.

In the summer of 1967, Garlits had vowed to keep growing his beard until he recorded a six-second pass. He did that in Swamp Rat 11 at the marquee U.S. Nationals—and, surrounded by fans at the starting line, he lathered up with shaving cream and took a razor to his face in a moment he called one of his career’s most memorable.

The car that revolutionized Top Fuel racing in 1971 was Swamp Rat 14, the rear-engine design he didn’t invent but certainly perfected. It was his innovative response to the 1970 accident at Lions Drag Strip at Long Beach, California, that had severed a portion of his right foot*(which couldn’t be restored because an emergency worker accidentally slammed it in the ambulance door).

Swamp Rat 14 drew a mixture of fascination and ridicule when it debuted, but its configuration is the standard today.

Swamp Rat 30 scared him with his famous blow-over in 1986 at Englishtown, New Jersey, and ended up in the Smithsonian. And No. 32 was the first radical-looking monostrut-wing dragster.

Garlits, who turned 88 on Jan. 14, continues to push the borders of racing performance in Swamp Rat 38, his battery-powered electric dragster. He’s credited for the first 200-mph pass in a Top Fuel car, and*last July at Palm Beach International Raceway in South Florida made a pass on Swamp Rat 38 at 189.04 mph—a record for an electric car.

Garlits is determined to break the 200 mark one more time.

I'm going to park this here in case they lock the 2019 F1 thread.

Racing Point will become the works Aston Martin team in Formula 1 from 2021.

The British luxury carmaker, which has struggled financially in 2019, has agreed an initial $237 million buy-out deal with Racing Point owner and billionaire Lawrence Stroll and a consortium.

Aston Martin confirmed that Racing Point will be renamed Aston Martin for 2021 and beyond, with Stroll - whose son Lance drives for the team - joining the carmaker's board.

"Today's fundraising is necessary and provides a platform to support the long-term future of the company," said Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer.

Following the Aston Martin Lagonda announcement earlier today, the Team can confirm that the manufacturer will remain title partner until the end of the 2020 F1 season but this contract will not be extended past the end of the current term.

Red Bull Racing has agreed to release Aston Martin from its Formula One exclusivity clause which in turn has allowed it to generate the necessary investment required to re-finance and pursue alternative opportunities within the sport.

Red Bull Advanced Technologies will continue to work with Aston Martin in order to deliver the Valkyrie hypercar, with the first cars scheduled for delivery at the end of the year.

"Stroll brings strong and proven expertise in both automotive and luxury brands more widely which we believe will be of significant benefit to Aston Martin," Palmer added.

NHRA Headache: Top Fuel Champ Steve Torrence, Others Skipping Season-Opening Winternationals

Series official calls it 'unfortunate'; 8-time champ Tony Schumacher says he could never imagine 'not showing up.'

BY SUSAN WADE
FEB 6, 2020

NHRA/NATIONAL DRAGSTER

What if the NHRA threw a 60th anniversary party and the reigning king of the “Kings of the Sport” didn’t show up?

Two-time defending Top Fuel champion Steve Torrence sent his RSVP via social media Wednesday. He won’t be racing at the season-opening 60th annual Winternationals that begin this weekend at Pomona, California.

Turns out, he's not alone in deciding to pass on the NHRA's first event of the 2020 season.

“Due to untimely circumstances beyond our control,” Torrence said in an online message, “it’s in the best interest of Torrence Racing to not participate in this weekend’s season opener in Pomona, California. We cannot thank our fans enough for their continued support and understanding at this time.”

That vague explanation also means the Capco/Torrence Racing Dragster driver will be absent from Auto Club Raceway at Pomona when the sanctioning body presents its 2019 crowned pro champions with their rings Sunday in the traditional prerace ceremonies.

Steve Torrence is passing on the first event of the NHRA season and is expected to be a no-show for the traditional awarding of the championship rings and jackets.

The NHRA responded with a statement from Jessica Hatcher, NHRA’s senior director of public relations and communications. She characterized Torrence’s absence merely as “unfortunate."

“It’s unfortunate that the Capco teams will not be attending the 2020 Winternationals," the statement said. "All NHRA teams may elect whether or not to compete in any given event and we are excited to see everyone who is joining us to kick off the season at the 60th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals. We are focused on creating a great experience for everyone in Pomona this week.

“We will honor Steve’s championship with a ring and trophy presentation when we can recognize and celebrate his achievements with him in person,” she said.

The trouble is that Torrence’s absence has greater complications. He’s not the only one opting out of the Winternationals. The Top Fuel class will now be missing three of the top seven racers from last year’s final standings.*

No. 5 Billy Torrence, Steve’s father, has pulled out. And No. 7 from last year, Mike Salinas, who skipped three races last season but qualified fifth for the Countdown to the Championship, announced last weekend that business commitments will keep him from the first four events this year.

Moreover, Steve Torrence’s decision has created a wave of discontent. In a show of solidarity, two owner-drivers—Top Fuel regular Scott Palmer and Funny Car racer Jeff Diehl—also are sitting out the Winternationals.

Wrote Palmer on a social media website, “Not sure if everyone realizes how much the Capco team and Torrence family helps smaller teams out there. The Torrence family and Team personally wired and plumbed our new car, and worked with Rick Ducusin, Will (Rodgers), Alex (Stapleton), Eddie (Reed) and (Steve) Warwick to finish and test this new car for us. Here at SPR and also JDR we don’t feel comfortable going to Pomona running without them there for advice and support, so we will start the season here in Phoenix in a few weeks.”

Diehl posted on a social media site, “We are sorry, but JDR will not be able to make it to the Pomona race this week. With the new car, body, etc., we are just not ready. On top of this we get a lot of help from the Laganas (Bobby & Dom) and the Capco & SPR (Scott Palmer Racing) teams/families—with them not going to this race makes it even harder on us. We are shooting for the Phoenix race, and we’re sure we will be all set by then. We just can’t do this to ourselves, our crew, sponsors and fans, to come out there and not be ready and be a hot mess. ... See you all at Phoenix.”

Ironically, the defections come less than a month after the NHRA instituted new rules for qualifying for its Countdown to the Championship playoffs that the series said would encourage participation.

That all adds up to a bit of a mess in the Top Fuel class and for Torrence, whose second straight championship clinching at Pomona last November ended in controversy. For his*physical altercation with first-round opponent Cameron Ferré, Torrence got a $25,000 fine, orders to complete anger-management training and boos from the crowd. That final day of the 2019 season, Torrence said, “The whole place here hates me. I’m the most hated champion ever, probably.”

Nevertheless, he and his father were planning to compete at the first of 24 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series stops until this past weekend, when the Torrence team tested at Phoenix. It’s unclear what sparked the change of plans, and it’s uncertain of Torrence will rejoin the tour at Race No. 2 next weekend at Phoenix. That’s where the team’s bright-red race cars and haulers remain.

Torrence declined Autoweek’s offer to talk.

Two multiple-time Top Fuel champions, Tony Schumacher and Larry Dixon, the Nos. 1-2 on the sport’s all-time victories list, also won’t be racing this weekend, either. Schumacher has been sidelined with sponsorship problems that kept him out the entire 2019 season, but he vows that he will be back in action later this season. Dixon is in the middle of a lawsuit against the NHRA.

The most decorated champion, eight-timer Schumacher, is a friend of Torrence’s, and he offered his perspective of the Winternationals no-show policy.

Tony Schumacher, right, has stayed active on the TV side while he works on securing sponsorship for a return to racing.

At first, Schumacher worried that Torrence might be sick because of Torrence’s well-documented battles as a teenage cancer patient and a heart-attack victim a few years ago that doctors attribute to those long-ago chemotherapy treatments. Assured Torrence is fine, he shared how he would feel if he himself could be in the mix this weekend.

“If I was racing—and I plan on being back real soon—I would want him (Torrence) there. I’ve always said the best wins were against the toughest people. I’d want him there because he is the champ. You want to go out and beat the champ, and if he’s not there it makes it rough,” Schumacher said.*

“If I won a championship and a (Doug) Kalitta wasn’t in the other lane or an Antron (Brown) wasn’t in the other lane, I’d have felt a little let down. I feel we need to show up. Same with Salinas ... I understand they do business. I get that. It’s really important they do their business. It’s really important to the race fans that they get the best drivers out there. It’s our sport, and it’s our job to grow that sport, no matter what the reason.

“We’ve all been mad at different points, but we’re all professional race car drivers. I’m paid to go to a race and do my job. I could never imagine not showing up, because I had the Army (sponsorship) on my car. It was my job. It wasn’t my hobby. I love doing it—everybody knows that—but the other teams are owed me being there,” Schumacher said.

“Put someone else in the car if you don’t want to go out. I don’t know—that’s me,” he said. “The guy’s got two great race cars, and he’s not willing to go. Me, I’m sitting here looking for a ride, and I’d drive anything."

Schumacher added, “It’s when you’re missing it that all those moments you took off or skipped, you’re kind of pissed. ... I enjoyed it from the moment I started to the moment I took a little pause. I never would dream of skipping (an event). Heck, I tried to drive with a broken leg (in 2001, while mending from a serious multiple-injury accident at Memphis).

“It’s our choice to race, and they (the NHRA) provide us with the safest drag-racing facilities and the biggest payout that drag-racing offers. We’re all lucky to be driving these cars. It’s a beautiful piece of art and the most powerful machine in the world. It’s a gift to be part of that world. We don’t have to show up, but when we’re allowed to, man, it’s the greatest show on Earth,” Schumacher said.

“But I’ve never walked a mile in his shoes. Of course, if I were in his shoes, I wouldn’t walk—I would drive a McLaren or something,” he said with a laugh. Turning serious, he said, “I have no right to judge. I’m simply sayin’ I love racing, man, and I’d want to be in that car. In my time I’ve had the Bernsteins, Joe Amato, Mike Dunn, Eddie Hill, and when you’re ‘that guy,’ like he (Torrence) is right now and you don’t show up, it’s less than satisfying, I would say. I can’t judge.”

Schumacher pondered what might happen when Torrence shows up at Pomona for the season finale in November, what kind of a reception he might receive.

"If you don’t come now, you get to the end of the year where you’ve got to be there, are you going to be booed more?" Schumacher said. "People pay a lot of money on tickets, a lot of money to come out and see him—and he ain’t there."

NOW your talkin' my language!
My favorite drag racing genre.
Top fuel Dragbikes.
So rare to see on tv.
Very dangerous.
No money in it for sponsors, since the parts are almost all hand made, one off , billet machined parts.
If you ever see them run in person, up close, you'll be hooked.
Basically, crazy bastards straddling rockets, that sound like they're powered by dynamite.

The godfather of the sport was Russ Collins.
After crashing his triple engine Honda at over 180mph.

And spending 18 months in a comma, he built "The Sorcerer"
A 600 hp. blown V8 Honda, that held the top fuel record 7.30 second/199.55 mph.
That record stood for an astonishing 11 years.

In a 1986 feature in Motorcyclist, Elmer Trett described the sensation of riding a Top Fuel motorcycle dragster - perhaps the most treacherous contraption in all of motorsports. “Making a pass on a top fueler is like being shot out of a rifle,” Trett said. “If your aim isn’t perfect, you’re going to miss the target.” He went on to explain that the bike consumed over three gallons of nitro/alcohol mixed fuel during its seven-second run.

Throughout the 1980s and '90s, Trett refined a series of motorcycles and continued to set records along the way. In all, he won eight national Top Fuel championships under three different sanctioning bodies.
Elmer was the first rider to eclipse 200 mph after being clocked at 201.43 at the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in 1983.
He was well on his way to a ninth title when he lost his life in an exhibition run.
At the time of his untimely death Trett held the 10 fastest speeds ever on a Top Fuel bike. He was the first to pass the 200, 210, 220 and 230 mph marks.

Here's one of my favorite clips, featuring Larry "Spiderman" McBride.
1350cc engine, producing 1350 hp. Running a 5.38 ET @232mph.
Turn up the sound!

Winners and Losers from the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Pomona

Doug Kalitta, Jack Beckman and Jeg Coughlin Jr. were not the only winners at Pomona.

NHRA/NATIONAL DRAGSTER

The start of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season is usually good for at least a few memorable moments. Bearing in mind this is just one of 24 races completed, we present some of the achievers and a few who have brighter days ahead following the Lucas Oil Winternationals at Pomona, California’s Auto Club Speedway.

WINNERS

KENNY DELCO, PRO STOCK

Delco reached a semifinal for the first time since the 2016 race at Englishtown, New Jersey. His No. 4 starting position appears to be his highest, at least in the past three decades. It was a great rebound from last year’s wild midseason crash.

ALEXIS DEJORIA, FUNNY CAR

The ROKiT Toyota Camry driver reached the semifinal in an impressive return to the seat of a Funny Car after a two-year break. She beat Paul Lee, then current Funny Car champion Robert Hight to advance to the semifinal round. She lost to eventual winner Jack Beckman. DeJoria also made a splash with new sponsors ABK Beer and ROKit Telecommunications.*

Female Racers

Never before have three female professional racers won at the same event, and that’s still true. But by the semifinal round, each pro class had at least one woman still running. In Top Fuel, Brittany Force and Leah Pruett potentially could have faced each other in the final round, but both lost. Alexis DeJoria in Funny Car and reigning champion Erica Enders in Pro Stock also fell in the semifinals in their respective classes.

BRITTANY FORCE, TOP FUEL

She was the No. 1 qualifier at 3.657 seconds and had the top qualifying speed of 334.32 mph. She used the third-quickest speed in history—336.23 mph—to defeat Clay Millican in the second round. Force has the national speed record at 338.17 (set last November at Las Vegas). So as of Sunday, she owns two of the top three speeds. Tony Schumacher has the second-fastest time, 336.57, from 2018, at Phoenix.

DOUG KALITTA, TOP FUEL

Call him the King of Pomona. The longtime Top Fuel racer became the only driver ever to earn three straight Winternationals trophies. He defeated young phenom Austin Prock in his fifth straight final round and ninth overall at this storied dragstrip. His performance was a big hit with new sponsors Fifth Third Bank, Mobil 1 and NGK, as well as faithful marketing partner MAC Tools.*

ALEX MILADINOVICH, FUNNY CAR

This newcomer to the pro ranks made the field on the bump spot and drew the two-time Funny Car champion and No. 1 qualifier Matt Hagan for the first round of eliminations. Hagan won handily. But Miladinovich had a respectable reaction time that nearly matched the veteran Hagan’s. But the Orange, Calif., resident’s “Hot 4 Teacher” car and merchandise (with the logo dedicated to his wife, who is a teacher) were extremely popular this past weekend.*

And Miladinovich was emotional simply for qualifying in his debut. He said it took “35 years to get here” and that he and his brother built the car and motor at his brother’s garage. “I’m really emotional,” he said. “I’m sorry for crying. You’re not supposed to cry when you talk. I love this sport.”*

MOTORSPORT CAREER SEEKERS

NHRA Launch Motorsports Careers is a new initiative designed to connect those with a passion for working in motorsports with individuals and companies in the racing industry who have career opportunities to offer. And Pro Stock Motorcycle legend Terry Vance and the Vance Family Foundation—donors of $1 million a year ago at the event to Doug Herbert’s B.R.A.K.E.S. teen driving program— endorsed the NHRA Launch Motorsports Careers platform with a $1 million donation Saturday.

The portal may be found at*nhra.com/launch.

“I've been involved in a lot of nice things since I started my foundation, and I was thinking I wanted to do something in our sport,” Vance, co-owner of the Pro Stock Motorcycle powerhouse team Vance & Hines, said. “I owe so much to the sport I can't even begin to tell you.”

He said he can remember when he was young and seeking a job but had no direction: “I think the most intimidating time in my life was when I was looking for a job and not knowing exactly how to manage, who to talk to. Launch is going to solve that problem for the guys that are looking for a job in the motorsports industry.”

LOSERS

TOP FUEL CLASS

It was missing newly recrowned champion Steve Torrence, his dragster-driving dad Billy Torrence, Scott Palmer and Mike Salinas, for various reasons. That left the field of 16 at just 13 and left a poor impression on an otherwise relatively healthy pro turnout.

ANTRON BROWN, TOP FUEL

Brown hasn’t won since the August 2018 race at Seattle. But since the close of last season, he has been reunited with crew chief Brian Corradi, who left for two years when he went to John Force Racing. Everyone sensed Brown and Corradi would rekindle their on-track magic right away. But Brown qualified in the bottom half of the field and lost in the opening round of eliminations to dangerous part-time spoiler Shawn Reed.

“We started off good in the first day of qualifying, and then on Saturday we got after it a little bit, but things didn’t go our way with a dropped hole,” Brown said. “On race day, we lined up, we felt really good, and we thought we had a really great shot at getting the round win. But we fell short with some tire shake; the track was extremely cold.”

This, of course, was just one race. And Brown is optimistic.

“I have all the confidence in the world in (crew chiefs) Brian Corradi, Mark Oswald, and this whole Matco Tools/Global Electronic Technology/Toyota Top Fuel Dragster team. We’re going to keep our heads down, keep pushing, keep working and get ready for Phoenix. There are plenty of races ahead of us.”

RON CAPPS, FUNNY CAR

First his hauler caught fire en route to preseason testing at Las Vegas and the Winternationals at Pomona. Then, once tuner Rahn Tobler and the entire Don Schumacher Racing organization scrambled to replace the damaged cars and equipment and get Capps into the advantageous top half of the qualifying order, Capps had a massive engine explosion in the quarterfinals and was done for the weekend.

The NAPA Dodge Charger driver said, “We’re a little behind everyone else that had the luxury of going to preseason testing in Vegas. I brag about the NAPA Know How our team has and how Tobler is so well-prepared and has our team so well-prepared for situations like this. We would’ve loved to have made some more runs this weekend, but going (3).94 and a 0.91(-second elapsed time) right after that was such good medicine for these guys. Then, fast-forward to Sunday, and we beat (Bob) Tasca (III), who’s been running really well. That was a big win.*

“We wanted to end our ‘Cinderella weekend’ with a trophy,” Capps said, “but getting the ‘Never Rest’ award from NHRA was cool. To go out there, qualify top-half, get lane choice, win first round ... we checked all of the boxes, except winning the race. That’s pretty good, considering these guys have spent a week tearing this thing apart and building a new setup.”

PRO STOCK CLASS

Both Jason Line and Jeg Coughlin Jr. have announced they’ll be retiring at the end of this year, and that’s definitely a blow to the Pro Stock lineup. What made the news a little more palatable was the way they kicked off their last hurrah. They put on a great show for the fans, squaring off in the final round Sunday, with Coughlin defeating Line. It marked the first time since August 2014, at Brainerd, Minnesota, that the two powerhouses had met in a final round.
