Inspired by Jessica’s painting
Weariness has overtaken her
and though she is hunted and alone,
she lies asleep on bare ground.
Though her clothes have been torn from her body,
and the earth is cold and damp,
her exhausted body does not shiver
draped only beneath a sheet taken in haste
as she fled her extortive captivity.
Though her destination is uncertain
because the face of the moon
and the stars which could lead her to safety
are obscured by a rolling squall.
And though she has clambered over jagged bluffs
and thrashed through violent currents;
her smooth bare feet remain unscathed
and wild animals have yielded her safe passage.
Though she is still pursued by evil men,
their search has been divided by an unnatural darkness,
and their hearts are filled with terror;
for God has commissioned angels to protect her;
delivering her from their lustful intentions
and covering her with his impenetrable hand,
solacing her with assurance of a warm dawn,
parting the clouds with light to guide her home.
Once again, thank you War for all your hard work on this re-creation of the painting.
