Forge FC defeat Cavalry FC to win first Canadian Premier League title

Canadian PressNovember 2, 2019, 5:54 PM

CALGARY — Hamilton Forge FC shut down the highest-scoring team in the Canadian Premier League to claim the inaugural championship.

Forge became the first CPL club to hoist the North Star Shield with a 1-0 victory Saturday over host Cavalry FC in Calgary.

Needing a goal to tie the series on aggregate and get to penalty kicks, Cavalry was pressing in extra time when the ball bounced to Elimane Cisse behind Calgary’s defence.

He and David Choiniere raced the ball downfield undefended for Choiniere to finish in the 94th minute.

CPL top goal scorer Tristan Borges scored in a 1-0 win in Hamilton in the opening leg.

Cavalry generated 20 of its league-leading 35 goals this season at Spruce Meadows’ ATCO Field, but Forge’s defence and goalkeeper Triston Henry produced a second straight clean sheet to take the series.

"This team really gathered together and you could see everybody played their part and we deserve to be champions," a hoarse Borges said.

The 21-year-old from Toronto scored 13 goals to earn the league’s Golden Boot.

"For the rest of my career, I’ll definitely think about this year," Borges said.

Cavalry topped the CPL table in both the spring and fall campaigns for an overall record of 19-4-5. Forge’s record was 17-6-5.

The majority of Cavalry players removed their runner-up medals from their necks after receiving them.

"It’s a hard one to swallow, especially here in front of our home fans," said Cavalry captain Nik Ledgerwood of Lethbridge, Alta.

"We didn’t score. We had 90 minutes to put the ball in the back of the net for whatever reason."

Cavalry had chances with top scorer Dominique Malonga missing headers in the first and second halves. Julian Buscher’s free kick in the second half curled just wide of the mark.

Sergio Camargo got enough of his right leg on a spinning ball in the 82nd minute to create a chance, but Henry made the diving save on the goal-line.

Including a 1-0 win over Cavalry at Tim Hortons Field to conclude their regular season Oct. 16, Hamilton shut down Calgary’s attack three straight matches.

"Defensively we made it tough for them," Forge captain Kyle Bekker said. "We got very compact and really didn’t give them the space they’ve exploited throughout the season."

Cavalry was shorthanded Saturday. Defender Joel Waterman and Borges were both shown red cards in Hamilton.

Canada Soccer’s disciplinary committee subsequently rescinded Borges’ suspension, but not Waterman’s given in the 37th minute for a handball in Calgary’s box.

"Us, seeing them lift the trophy in our home, it hurts," Calgary head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. said. "It’ll inspire us for next year too.

A temperature of seven degrees and negligible wind made conditions comfortable for both players and the 5,831 spectators led by Cavalry’s Foot Soldier fan club.

As CPL champions, Forge FC gets an automatic entry into the 2020 CONCACAF League. The club reached the quarterfinals before they were ousted by Olimpia of Honduras in 2019.

Bekker, a 29-year-old from Oakville, Ont., marvelled at the arc both his team and the CPL travelled in its first season.

"When you come back and join something like this which is by all means a project … you never know how it’s going to go, but from top to bottom, this entire organization, throughout the league, everyone’s kind of bought in and rolled up their sleeves and said ‘we’re going to truly make something great,"’ Bekker said.

"Just being a part of something that’s so much bigger than myself, to be sitting here at the end of what’s been a long season, it’s fantastic.

"There’s no better feeling than this. You can’t take this away from any of the boys."

3rd: PPG*2:20-*Eller*(5) (Wilson)

Recap

The Flames had a chance to string together three straight wins, but it wasn’t in the cards Sunday night. Calgary finished up a 10 day road trip with a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals in DC, their 5th game on the trek East.

The Flames looked like a fresh team in the first period as they went toe to toe with one of the NHL’s best. Calgary put eight shots on net, was able to handle Washington’s speed for the most part and even opened the game with the first goal on the contest.*Andrew Mangiapane*would get the Flames on the board with a nice move cross crease, beating*Ilya Samsonov, putting the Flames up 1-0.

Six minutes later the Washington Capitals would kick it into another gear and the Flames were left spinning their wheels.*Jakub Vrana*would finish off a beautiful 2 on 1, beating*Cam Talbotblocker side and the game was tied 1-1. Vrana wasn’t done in the period just yet. He would once again beat Talbot blocker side, this time all on his own with a beautiful sharp angle shot that put the Caps up 2-1. Calgary would strike back as the period was winding down thanks to who else, Elias Lindholm. Calgary’s second marker started with an*Oliver Kylington*shot that was probably going wide, but Lindholm tipped the puck out of mid air, about chest high, for the perfect deflection. The puck would fly past Samsonov and with two seconds left in the opening frame it was tied 2-2.

For the good guys, that was unfortunately the end of the fun. Calgary’s offence would dry up, as would their energy and the well rested Capitals took full advantage. Jakob Vrana would score the only goal of the second period, completing his hat trick and Washington would take a 3-2 lead after two.

If the Flames looked lackluster in the second, they looked toast in the third. Washington would fire nine third period shots at*Cam Talbot*and one would find the back of the net, this off the stick of*Lars Eller, his fifth of the season. That goal, a mere 2:20 into the period was more than enough for the high powered Capitals and they would snap the Flames two game winning streak with a 4-2 victory.

Final Thoughts

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: a Flames goaltender deserved better. Cam Talbot was hung out to dry by his defence, once by*Mark Giordano*and the other by*Travis Hamonic, both times leading to goals. Talbot hasn’t really gotten a fair shake while in net and though he played well he had ZERO help from his teammates.

What happened to the Flames offence that scored nine goals over their last two games? Andrew Mangiapane was one of the few Flames out there trying to make things happen.*Sam Bennett*had a solid night early on as well, but like the rest of the team, faded as the game wore on.*Johnny Gaudreau,*Sean Monahan,*Mikael Backlund*and*Matthew Tkachuk*were non existent (sounds like a broken record), combining for five SOG between the four of them. That’s not enough and it’s a all too common occurrence for the Flames stars in big games against top teams.

In the end, the Flames haven’t been near home for almost two weeks. A road trip like this will surely wear you down, especially when you had Thursday’s comeback which will take a physical and emotional toll on you. Then a back to back with Columbus and Washington to finish things off isn’t easy, but this is the NHL and Calgary isn’t the only team to face obstacles over the course of the season. Point being: they need to be better.

Andrew Mangiapane (F): Mang was the best Flame on the ice tonight. He had a goal and an assist, was a +1, blocked a shot and was 100% from the face off dot. He may have been the only Flames player on the ice who looked like he was engaged for 60 minutes.

Tkachuk had a 2 goal night for my Flames over the Coyotes
on Tuesday including the overtime winner with 44 seconds left as they go to 9-7-2.

Oilers got thumped 5-2 by the Blues in Edmonton last night in one of only 2 league games past night. The Rangers dumped the Wings 5-1 in the other game.

Rapters beat the Kings 124-120 past night.

Here is what Tuesday looked like

As far as Chara goes, that is a major accomplishment and he should be proud. A win would have made it feel better I'm sure.
